⚽Variability of Game Systems

An important part of being a good team is knowing how to play in different formations and systems. It's key not to stick to just one way of playing but to be able to change and adjust depending on the situation, whether it's during a season or in a game.

Coaches react to training cues and the team's needs by using different tactics and formations. They also focus on fixing team weaknesses and individual player issues, while improving teamwork. Changing the game plan is important for success, matching the strengths and weaknesses of both our team and the opponents.

The variation of systems and concepts is crucial for success, whether it's:

  • in response to the opponent,

  • adapting to the form of our own team,

  • aiming for a specific outcome, or

  • reacting to the current game situation.

Every game concept aims to make our play more active and effective, always considering the overarching principles of the game. Flexibility, dominance, stability, and efficiency remain constant principles when creating a game plan, regardless of the specific adjustments for each game and situation.

It never hurts to master different systems. Versatility is always a positive attribute. I would never reject it, but I find it difficult to generalize whether many systems can also be counterproductive for a team. My experience is that a well-developed game idea makes it easier for players to adapt to a different formation. However, formation changes often require time to take effect, and too many changes can indeed be confusing. Ultimately, success also determines the evaluation of coaching decisions. Many football coaches are faced with the decision to either stick to their preferred system or adapt to the squad's circumstances. It's important to note: Ultimately, the players on the field are the ones playing the game. Therefore, it's essential to align your game idea with your squad. However, the game idea must remain at the forefront as the foundation

Of course, the choice of system also depends on whether I'm going into the game as the favorite or facing a team with significantly more potential. But regardless, as I've already mentioned, I'm an advocate of proactivity, so my own plan and actions take precedence. Nevertheless, thorough preparation is essential: It would be foolish to ignore the wealth of information about the opponent.
