⚽Video Analysis

Using videos is consistently a valuable complement to our daily work. Visual content allows coaches to effectively communicate with their players and build upon that interaction. Particularly in technical areas, videos can clarify aspects and provide better documentation of progress. Nevertheless, it's important to remember that video usage should remain just that – a complement.

In the world of football, there's a growing emphasis on video analysis. However, our focus shouldn't solely be on analyzing our opponents. Instead, it's crucial to dedicate ourselves to thoroughly examining and understanding our own gameplay.

In youth development, incorporating video analysis is highly recommended as it provides players with an alternative viewpoint on their performance. Nevertheless, it's important to recognize that while videos offer a perspective, they don't always reflect the objective truth, which may differ from individual player experiences.

Video analysis is undeniably valuable, serving as a catalyst for training sessions. However, it's essential to acknowledge the considerable time commitment involved in preparing and presenting videos to both the team and individual players, especially when compared to other aspects of training and development.

Team Analysis (Post-Match Review)

The team analysis (post-match review) should be presented to the team within one day, but no later than two days after the game, to ensure that memories of individual game situations are still fresh.

The post-match review is based on the following points:

  • General evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. Why did we win or lose the game?

  • Was the game plan executed?

  • Did the players implement the training contents that were conveyed based on the game plan?

  • Strengths/weaknesses of the game in the four phases:

    • Playing with the ball

    • Playing without the ball

    • Transitioning after ball loss

    • Transitioning after ball gain

  • Set-pieces

Based on these points, the team analysis is structured. The insights gained from the video analysis will be incorporated into the training sessions in the following days to further develop the team.

Individual Analysis

The individual analysis is not bound by time constraints; rather, it is geared towards long-term and sustainable player development. At the start of each season, every coach assesses each player using a player evaluation form, allowing for the creation of a comprehensive strengths and weaknesses profile for each individual.

This profile serves as the initial reference point for the game analyst's individual analysis. Additionally, the coach's predefined learning objectives for the starting eleven players before each game provide further guidance.

Furthermore, each player has a specific positional profile, offering another anchor for the individual analysis.

Lastly, the game plan, which outlines both group and team tactical elements, serves as the final reference point. As mentioned earlier, during the post-match review, players can reflect on their performance within the team context using insights from the game plan.

Therefore, the individual analysis comprises four components:

  1. Strengths-Weaknesses Profile

  2. Learning Objectives

  3. Positional Profile

  4. Game Plan
