⚽Principles for Training

We can only develop further if we strive to surpass what we already know.

Ronald Osborn

The overarching goal of training must be to advance the individual training and development of the players. This should go hand in hand with, and also lead to, the continuous improvement of the team.

Each training session should fundamentally consider the following characteristics:

  • Technically demanding;

  • High dynamism in the training process;

  • High motor activation (avoid static exercises);

  • Intensive training drills and game forms;

  • High intellectual engagement (players should think along);

  • Expansion of tactical variability;

  • Focus on spaces, not positions;

  • Numerous (tactical) decisions.

Organization is Key

Organizing a good football training session requires careful planning and coordination to ensure that the sessions are efficient and effective. Here are some important organizational aspects:

Training Planning and Structure:

  • Annual and Seasonal Planning: Long-term planning of training goals, content, and focuses.

  • Weekly and Daily Plans: Detailed planning of each training session, including warm-up, main part, and cool-down.

  • Periodization: Division of the training year into different phases (preparatory phase, competition phase, transition phase) with specific objectives.

Resource Management:

  • Field and Facilities: Ensure that training fields and necessary facilities (goals, cones, balls, etc.) are available and in good condition.

  • Equipment: Provide the necessary training equipment (balls, cones, bibs, etc.) in sufficient quantities.

Time Management:

  • Punctuality: Adhere to the scheduled start and end times of the training.

  • Time Allocation: Make effective use of training time with a clear structure and time limits for each exercise.

Participant Management:

  • Number of Participants: Adjust exercises and game formats based on the number of players present.

  • Attendance Monitoring: Regularly check attendance and document absences.

Precise Allocation of Players to Exercises and Game Forms:

  • Player Assignment: Thoughtfully and accurately assign players to specific exercises and game formats.

  • Consideration of Skills and Developmental Stages: Take into account the individual skills, positions, and developmental stages of players when making assignments.

  • Group Size and Composition: Ensure that group sizes and compositions align with training objectives and enable effective training.

Communication:

  • Information to Players and Parents: Clearly and promptly communicate training times, locations, and content.

  • Feedback: Provide regular and constructive feedback to players.

Preparation and Follow-Up:

  • Preparation: Implement preparatory measures such as setting up the field, checking equipment, and arranging training materials before the session.

  • Follow-Up: Clean up the training area and provide feedback on the session’s progress.

Safety Aspects:

  • Injury Prevention: Implement measures to avoid injuries, such as proper warm-up routines and correct technique.

  • First Aid: Ensure the availability of a first aid kit and have knowledge of first aid procedures.

Documentation and Analysis:

  • Training Log: Record the contents and objectives of each training session.

  • Analysis: Regularly analyze training activities and adjust training plans based on insights gained.

Teamwork and Delegation:

  • Coaching Team: Foster collaboration and clearly define roles and responsibilities within the coaching staff.

  • Delegation: Assign tasks to assistant coaches, team managers, or captains to support the head coach and reduce their workload.

Flexibility and Adaptability:

  • Adaptation to Unexpected Events: Ability to adjust training spontaneously in response to external factors (e.g., weather, field availability).

  • Consideration of Individual Needs: Flexibility to address specific needs or current performance levels of players.

PlayerPlus

In our team, we’ve been using the app "PlayerPlus" for a while now and are absolutely thrilled with the range of features it offers. We particularly appreciate the function for managing the participant list for training sessions. We have it set up so that all players are automatically marked as present, and only those who cannot attend need to actively notify us. This saves a tremendous amount of time and effort for both the players and the organization team. No one has to constantly remember to check in – a significant advantage for everyone involved!

In addition, "PlayerPlus" offers many other practical features that we’re gradually discovering and testing. Thanks to the premium version, we have access to numerous additional features that make our team organization even more efficient. From scheduling and communication to analyzing statistics – "PlayerPlus" is a true all-rounder and has become indispensable for us.
