⚽Paris Saint-Germain vs Barcelona

The UEFA Champions League has once again made headlines this week: 4 games, 18 goals – a real treat for every football fan! In today's newsletter, we take a close look at the thrilling match between PSG and Barcelona.

Paris made an impressive start. Whenever they were in possession of the ball in their own zone, they organized themselves into a 4-2-2-2 formation with Mbappé on the left side and Dembélé on the far right. These two players are particularly crucial and difficult to defend against for Barcelona, as they are extremely fast and skilled at dribbling.

When Paris managed to advance into the second zone, they switched to a 3-2-5 system, with Mendez taking the wing position and Mbappé moving into the half-space.

On the other hand, Barcelona also displayed the same formation when they were in possession of the ball in their own Zone 1. They, too, played in a 4-2-2-2 system.

Like Paris and many other top clubs, Barcelona also exhibited a similar spatial setup. They played in a 3-2-5 system, with Cancelo taking the wing position and Rafinha moving into the half-space accordingly.

Enrique's team defended with determination and a high defensive line. They employed a primarily man-to-man marking approach in a 4-4-2 system, focusing on staying tight to the opponents, especially in the center. This approach made it challenging for Barça to execute their usual combination play, leading them to rely more on targeted long passes. The intense man-marking created spaces behind the defense that Barcelona could exploit.

Barcelona also dared to defend courageously and with a high line in a 4-4-2 system, with Gündogan pushing forward to join Lewandowski in attacking the front line.

Due to Paris' outstanding quality with Dembélé and Mbappé on the wing positions, it was evident that Barcelona's wing players were under significant defensive pressure. When Paris had the ball in the opponent's half, Barcelona often transitioned from a 4-4-2 into a 6-3-1 formation to ensure effective double coverage on the dribbling players on both sides. Overall, it was observed that even Cancelo, who typically plays offensively, deliberately played more conservatively to prevent quick counterattacks from Paris.

After PSG initially performed better, Barcelona managed to stabilize and had dangerous advances forward. The game appeared to be evenly balanced after about 20 minutes.

In the 36th minute, Barcelona took the lead with a goal scored by Rafinha, which was initiated by a precise pass from the 17-year-old talent Cubarsi. Cubarsi's abilities in game setup are impressive for his age. With his outstanding game vision, he could develop into an important figure for Barcelona if he maintains his performance at this level.

After halftime, Enrique substituted Marco Asensio with the fast Barcola. This moved Dembélé into the half-space, allowing him to have more influence on the game. Paris started the second half strongly and put Barcelona under pressure. Barça gradually lost control, especially in the center of the pitch.

In the 48th minute, Dembélé scored an impressive goal with a left-footed shot that was unstoppable for Ter Stegen. After that, it was clear that the momentum was on PSG's side.

Xavi's team had difficulties retaining possession, which led to a well-executed goal by Vitinha two minutes later, putting PSG in the lead. Barcelona appeared somewhat passive in this sequence, allowing Vitinha to expertly exploit the space ahead and score after receiving a precise pass from Ruiz.

For Barcelona, this was now a test of character. Xavi reacted by substituting Pedri for Sergio Roberto and Joao Félix for Yamal in the 61st minute. Rafinha shifted to the other side and played as a right winger, while Félix came in as a left winger but primarily moved into the half-space.

Just a minute later, Pedri made an outstanding pass with his first touch of the ball to Rafinha, who scored the equalizing goal. This demonstrates that while tactics are important, ultimately it's players with individual skill who make the crucial difference.

Barcelona was back in the game, and now the match was finely balanced once more. Momentum in football is truly captivating. A single goal can have a profound effect on both teams. Xavi's substitutions proved to be inspired that evening. In the 75th minute, he brought on Christensen for de Jong, and Christensen made an immediate impact, scoring from a corner just two minutes later to make it 3-2.

PSG then brought on Gonçalo Ramos and took full risks. Barcelona defended deep and allowed very little, resulting in a narrow but crucial victory from Barcelona's perspective. An exciting rematch is definitely expected, given PSG's players like Mbappé, Dembélé, and the in-form Vitinha cannot be underestimated. It was certainly not Mbappé's evening, as he had very little influence throughout the game. However, I'm confident he will find his rhythm better in the rematch and pose more of a threat. I'm convinced that the rematch will be just as thrilling and exciting.
