⚽4-2-3-1
The 4-2-3-1 formation was the most popular starting formation in the last Premier League season. It consists of a four-man defense, a double pivot midfield, an attacking trio in front, and a lone striker.
The major advantage of this system is the ability to operate from a secure structure almost at all times. The central midfield area in front of the defense line is highly compact due to the double pivot midfield setup. The wings can be quickly covered. During offensive moves, there's always at least one defensive midfielder available for support, and the wingers can stretch the opponent's defense. A key factor in this tactical setup is the double pivot midfield, acting as a stabilizing element.
When using the 4-2-3-1 formation, coaches need to bear in mind that the wide midfielders require significant stamina, and the full-backs must excel in one-on-one situations. While the midfield may be well-staffed, the lone striker upfront can become isolated, posing a disadvantage if there's no additional midfielder advancing forward.
4-3-3-1
Summary:
Advantages:
High tactical flexibility
High compactness in the center
Suitable for counter-attacking teams in its defensive interpretation
Disadvantages:
High running workload for players on the wings
Spaces are created on the wings
Only one striker in the offensive
⚽4-4-2 Diamond
If you want your team to play offensively, the 4-4-2 diamond formation offers many advantages. Especially with wide and advanced full-backs, the diamond shape in a 4-4-2 formation can be utilized very offensively. This allows for easy creation of triangles and diamonds, as the name suggests. In the diamond, you often have numerical superiority in the center, as you have four players there, while the opponent often only has two or three players depending on their system. The wide midfielders tucking inside can effectively involve the full-backs in the attacking play.
It is important to have good full-backs who can effectively utilize the space on the side and possess the required skills when choosing this system. In contrast to the 4-4-2 flat formation, the two strikers in the diamond are positioned wider, giving the playmaker more room to express their creativity. If you don't have a typical playmaker, the diamond formation may not make much sense, highlighting the significance of individual players for a tactical system.
Due to its offensive nature, this system often creates numerical advantages in front of the opposing defensive line, making it suitable for quick counter-pressing in case of a turnover in the center. With the two strikers and three attacking midfielders, there are five players in the offensive line who can exert strong pressure on the opponent's defense.
In the diamond formation, it's difficult for the opponent to find a direct path through the center to the goal, so they will try to build their attacking play through the wings. However, problems can arise precisely in these areas, especially against opponents playing in a 4-3-3 system or with double-covered wings, as the wings in the diamond formation are always outnumbered.
Additionally, the wings are often occupied by very attack-minded full-backs, which is beneficial for the offensive play but can pose a problem in the event of a turnover. This creates large spaces behind the two full-backs that cannot be covered by either the defensive midfielder or the two center-backs. Therefore, the diamond formation is vulnerable to counter-attacks.
4-4-2 Diamond
Summary:
Advantages:
Numerical superiority in the center
Ideal setup for a typical playmaker
Plenty of space in the offensive for the full-backs
Effective counter-pressing with a diamond formation
Disadvantages:
Increased vulnerability on the wings
Only one defensive midfielder for cover
Higher running demands, especially for the full-backs
Heavy reliance on specific player types required for this system
